Yay we're here! The flight was actually not that bad, except for the lack of sleeping and numb body parts. We watched lots of movies though and we made our first friend on the flight to Zambia! We think his name is Terrence...we're not really sure though because it was impossible to understand 50% of what he said. He lives on a farm outside of Lusaka which he actually pointed out from the plane. The airports were sooo empty, even the one in Jo Burg. We're waaay too used to NYC airports.
When we arrived, our long-time friend Mwape was there to pick us up. He can be a little hard to understand. Personal fav was when he asked us if his answers to our questions were satisfactory, to which Sarah responded, ''wait, a factory?''. Meanwhile, Akon, Kanye, Rihanna, and Bob Marley was bumping in the car. American hits get at us. We went in a carride to the big, new soccer stadium where we switched cars and went back to our house for 8 weeks. We met Ray and Mubanga (??), who were so hilarious. They took us out to pizza and soda for our first Zambian meal. How traditional. Mubanga asked us if we'd seen the movie George of the Jungle, and when we said yes he said his house, the one we were staying in, was in a tree (Sarah believed him at first. Not going to lie, for a second there I did too haha). They are all quite the jokesters. They're constantly joking around with us and they're so friendly.
When we got back to the house, we ate dinner with Mubanga and learned our first few phrases in Nyanja and Bemba, the major traditional languages here. Mubanga speaks 7 languages! It's good that they're helping us learn, because when they talk to each other we have no idea what's going on. Mubanga is quite the movie fan, I think he's seen more movies than we have. BUT they watch HARRY POTTER here! Win! The house is great and definitely exceeds expectations. We have our own room and the kitchen is nice and big and there's a tv room! Someone's niece, Maria (we're not really sure whose niece she is, but she's living in our house with us), has put High School Musical stickers all over our bedroom walls. Ah, a lovely taste of home. There's another volunteer living there now, too. His name is John and he's Irish. He's been here since January but he's leaving on Thursday :(. Hopefully new volunteers will replace him soon. That's about it for now, we'll write again soon!
